Trarthus Gems & Core Drop Pool Changes Explained
Four months after the release of Mercenaries Challenge League, Path of Exile 3.27 Keepers of the Flame release date has finally been confirmed. The developers announced a livestream reveal on October 23rd, with the full game officially launching on October 31st.
With approximately two weeks until the release of 3.27, we’ve finally received some news about the upcoming expansion. Two days ago, the developers released a post detailing the future development of Mercenaries League mechanic in Path of Exile.

Mercenaries Won’t Be In The Core Game
As we suspected, Mercenaries will not be coming to the core game in Keepers of the Flame. However, because of the widespread player interest in the mechanic, they announced plans to add Mercenaries to the core game in a future update, though this will still require extensive balancing.
For example, near the end of POE 3.14, they expressed similar views about Ultimatum League mechanic, but they didn’t actually reintroduce it to the core game until the subsequent 3.23 patch. Therefore, it’s reasonable to assume that Mercenaries won’t be returning to the core game anytime soon.
However, Mercenaries Challenge League adds much more than just Mercenaries mechanic to Path of Exile 3.26, also introducing Mercenary-specific items and skill gems, known as Trarthus Gems.
Notably, the developers announced that these specific items and skill gems will be included in the 3.27 global drop pool, allowing you to reap the power of Mercenaries in the new league.
Here, POECurrency.com takes a look at some of Mercenary-specific items and Trarthus Gems you might be able to obtain in Path of Exile 3.27 drop pool.
Mercenary-Exclusive Items
The 3.26 patch actually added a ton of new unique items to the game, many of which were widely used in popular builds in Path of Exile 3.26.
Aside from all of these unique items, the developers have actually only mentioned five unique items specific to Mercenaries mechanic that will be in the 3.27 drop pool.
In 3.26, to get these mercenary-exclusive items, you had to find a mercenary equipped with the unique item and then win a duel for it to drop. These items were account-bound rewards and could not be traded with other players for PoE currency, but this may change in Path of Exile 3.27.
Scornflux
First up, we have Scornflux, a unique pair of boots themed around Arcane Surge buff. This item doesn’t grant any movement speed on its own, but it does cause Arcane Surge cast speed stat to also grant additional movement speed. So, on top of Arcane Surge buff, you’ll get a 20% increase in movement speed, since the buff also increases casting speed by 20%.
Of course, you also get a pretty significant Arcane Surge scaling, especially with Hierophant Ascendancy.
Most Hierophant builds typically opt for Arcane Blessing Ascendancy passive, which grants a 20% increase in Arcane Surge from nearby small nodes. There’s also Arcane Capacitor, which boosts the buff by up to 90%.
Additionally, there are a few other ways to enhance Arcane Surge that rely more heavily on the Ascendancy passive or require investing more POE Divine Orbs for sale to add additional affixes to gear. But with these alone, you’re getting a 42% increase in movement speed from Scornflux, which isn’t bad.
The problem with this item, however, is the trade-off with crafted boots, as you lose valuable affixes, especially those with Eldritch Implicits, which can be quite painful.
Howlcrack
Next up is Howlcrack, an interesting unique helmet that allows you to bypass Warcry’s cooldown, allowing you to cast skills continuously. However, in exchange, Warcry costs a significant amount of extra health.
In PoE 3.27, you can invest in Warcry Mastery to restore 15% of your health when using Warcry. Note, however, that this only applies to manually cast Warcry, not automatically triggered ones.
However, like the previous unique boots, this helmet will have to compete with crafted helmets with Eldritch Implicits, and they’re hard to ignore.
But I would say it’s more of a build-enabling item, as bypassing Warcry’s cooldown could be a very powerful mechanic based on developer hints about future additions in 3.27.
Binds Of Bloody Vengeance
Next up is Binds of Bloody Vengeance, a unique belt that provides a very powerful bonus, ensuring that your next attack will be a guaranteed critical hit after you’ve received a critical hit.
In 3.26, there was a very impressive build using this unique belt. It paired it with Reckless Defense Jewel, significantly increasing the critical hit chance of incoming attacks and offering a very high effective block record. Even if the attack is blocked, the incoming critical hit still applies.
Additionally, this build also features Viridi’s Veil, which provides multiple defense and attack bonuses, ensuring that any critical hits that get through the block do not deal additional damage.
This build’s high block and defense settings make it quite viable in the endgame. However, the use of these rare items also makes it quite expensive. If you want to ease into the endgame, you can buy PoE Currency at POECurrency.com for 3.27 expansion to quickly acquire all the necessary unique items and maximize the potential of this build.
Azadi Crest
Another key unique item we’d like to mention is Azadi Crest, which is undoubtedly the most powerful of all the unique items in Path of Exile 3.27 core drop pool.
We don’t yet know what rarity tier these items will ultimately fall into, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Azadi Crest ends up being a Tier 2 or 1 unique item in 3.27.
Because Azadi Crest provides a very powerful bonus, it allows you to roll unlucky/lucky effects three times instead of two, choosing the best or worst outcome based on whether the roll was lucky or unlucky.
This is obviously especially powerful with Gladiator’s Lucky Block, but it works with any lucky or unlucky effect, meaning it’s also excellent with effects like lucky damage, especially with the potential for bonus chaos damage at high damage ranges.
Hand Of Heresy
The last Mercenary-exclusive unique item to join the core drop pool in PoE 3.27 is Hand of Heresy. This special glove can trigger an interesting new debuff, Excommunicated, which prevents enemies from dealing chaos damage.
It’s worth noting that this only prevents enemies from dealing base chaos damage, so the chaos damage dealt by items like Divine Flesh won’t be affected.
Trarthus Gems
Those are Mercenary-exclusive items that will be added to the core drop pool in PoE 3.27. So, what about Trarthus Gems? Actually, the developers have come up with an interesting way to get them into the core drop pool.
Honestly, we assumed they would be added directly to Transfigured Gems system and drop like other Transfigured Gems. Instead, Trarthus Gems will now be added to the game as Heist-exclusive rewards, randomly dropping from Gem Chests in Heist Blueprints and Contracts side room.
As for the usefulness of these Trarthus Gems in 3.27, they’re a bit hit-and-miss. But here are some interesting options:
- Spectral Shield Throw of Trarthus: Unlike the base skill, this one fires a spectral copy of your shield, creating a piercing projectile that deals damage and releases shards on impact. Like the original, this skill scales with your shield’s defense.
- Spectral Throw of Trarthus: This is an attack trap skill. Once triggered, the trap fires multiple piercing projectiles equal to your current melee weapon, which then return to the trigger point, damaging enemies in its path.
- Wave of Conviction of Trarthus: This gem creates an expanding wave of energy that surges forward, continuously damaging enemies in a cone. Each enemy struck is affected by Exposure corresponding to its highest damage type.
- Bladefall of Trarthus: Once activated, it continuously consumes mana, causing a volley of ethereal weapons to rain down from the sky around you, damaging affected enemies. On most maps, it acts as an automated bomber, capable of unleashing a barrage of damage on tanky monsters and bosses.
However, we’ll need to wait for the 3.27 patch notes to learn more about the specific effects of these gems. We’ll need to wait for any balance or mechanic adjustments to these abilities and thus understand their impact on the 3.27 build and beyond.
That’s it. This is the first bit of information POECurrency.com has learned about item drops in Path of Exile 3.27. Do you think these exclusive items and Trarthus Gems will maintain the same potential in future builds as they did in 3.26? Are they just a gimmick for a new global drop pool, or are they a potential enhancement for future Mercenary mechanics entering the core game? We’ll have to wait and see!
