Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus turned red again as the Left won all major positions in the student union elections held on November 4.
Aditi Mishra became the new JNU Students’ Union President, defeating ABVP’s Vikas Patel by 414 votes (1,861 to 1,447). K. Gopika won the vice president’s post with a huge margin of 1,236 votes, getting 2,966 votes against Tanya Kumari of ABVP, who got 1,730.

Sunil Yadav from the Left won by just 74 votes, securing 1,915 against ABVP’s Rajeshwar Kant Dubey’s 1,841. Danish Ali completed the Left’s clean sweep by winning the Joint Secretary post with 1,991 votes, defeating ABVP’s Anuj Damara, who got 1,762.

This year’s election saw a 67% voter turnout, which is slightly lower than the 70% turnout in the previous election.

Out of 9,043 registered students, a large majority cast their votes. The new union is expected to focus on improving library and hostel facilities, research funding, and creating a more inclusive campus. Discussions on education policy, campus autonomy, and student welfare will remain key priorities. In the previous JNUSU elections, left-backed candidates won all the major three of the four central posts. Meanwhile, this year’s JNU elections were between the Left Unity group, made up of AISA, SFI, and DSF and the ABVP. With this win, Left Unity has once again strengthened its hold over campus politics. Last year, the ABVP had managed to win one central panel seat, but this time it lost all posts. The only close fight was for the Joint Secretary position, where Left Unity’s Sunil Yadav won by a small margin.
