The Congress said that it will support actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the government in Tamil Nadu. A Congress delegation handed over a letter of support to Vijay at the headquarters of the TVK in Chennai.
However, the party said that its support will be conditional on the TVK “keeping out from this alliance any communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution” of India.
In its electoral debut, the TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the state, winning 108 seats. However, it fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly. Vijay later met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar in Chennai to stake claim to form the government in the state. He has claimed that his party has the majority required to form the government, said the governor.
Even with the support of the Congress, TVK still falls short of the majority mark by five seats. The party is believed to be making attempts to secure the support of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, the Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist), which are currently part of the alliance led by the DMK. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that roughly every sixth MP of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha had won elections through “vote theft”. He further claimed the Hindutva party would not secure even 140 seats if elections were conducted fairly.
Gandhi further alleged that institutions responsible for maintaining voter lists and conducting elections were themselves being “remote controlled” and said the ruling party’s “real fear” was the truth.
Later in the day, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav demanded that the Supreme Court direct the Election Commission to make video recordings of vote counting available to the public. Questioning the fairness of the West Bengal Assembly elections, Yadav claimed there had been discrepancies during the counting process. Read on.

Pakistan sportspersons will be able to participate in multilateral events in India, but will not be allowed to take part in bilateral tournaments in the country, the Union government has stated. “In so far as bilateral sports events in each other’s country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan,” it added.
During international and multilateral events, the country’s policy would be guided “by the practices of international sports bodies and the interest of our own sportspersons”, said the government.
