Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 594-km-long Ganga Expressway, a major connectivity corridor linking Meerut to Prayagraj, positioning the project as a pivotal driver of economic transformation, regional integration and industrial growth across Uttar Pradesh.
While launching the access-controlled greenfield corridor in Hardoi, Modi said, “These modern lifelines are today proclaiming the bright future of India.” He added that improved connectivity would directly benefit the rural economy, noting, “This will increase our farmers’ income.”
Spanning 12 districts and designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph, the six-lane (expandable to eight) expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj from 10-12 hours to around 6-7 hours. The corridor includes a 3.2-km airstrip, intelligent traffic systems and planned logistics and manufacturing clusters along the route.
Chief Minister Adityanath described the project as a “lifeline” for villages, farmers, entrepreneurs and youth, stating it would accelerate development and bridge regional disparities.
Connectivity Boosts Investment Flow
With an estimated investment of around Rs 36,000 crore and design speeds up to 120 kmph, the expressway is expected to nearly halve travel time between western and eastern Uttar Pradesh, improving freight efficiency and reducing logistics costs.
Manish Mathur, CEO-Cranes at ACE- Action Construction Equipment, said, “The scale of the Ganga Expressway reflects the ambition of India’s next-generation road infrastructure, with a strong focus on speed, efficiency, and technology integration.”
He added that seamless tolling and corridor efficiency would make long-distance movement more predictable for businesses.
Neeraj Balani, Chief Customer Officer at Welspun One, said, “We view this 594-km corridor as a high-speed industrial spine that integrates clusters with the broader National Capital Region.” He said faster transit times could enable large-scale logistics hubs and more efficient distribution networks.
Corridor Spurs Regional Growth
Connecting 12 districts and integrating with major expressways such as Purvanchal, Agra-Lucknow and Bundelkhand, the corridor is expected to strengthen regional linkages and unlock new investment zones across Uttar Pradesh.
“Through the Ganga Expressway, Ghaziabad is emerging as the main centre of the economic development of the entire state,” said Varun Garg, Director at Karyan Group. He further added that improved connectivity between NCR and eastern Uttar Pradesh could reshape the region’s real estate landscape over the next decade.
Vimal Nadar, National Director and Head of Research at Colliers India, said, “The Ganga Expressway is anticipated to accelerate industrial and warehousing demand along its corridor.”
He added that cities such as Meerut, Kanpur and Prayagraj could emerge as key logistics and commercial hubs, supported by improved multimodal connectivity, including the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor and National Waterway 1.
Last-Mile Gaps Remain Key
While the expressway provides a strong backbone for economic activity, it is also expected to catalyse gradual investment across sectors by improving accessibility and reducing travel time between key markets.
Mohit Jandu, Managing Director at J Infratech, said, “The better connectivity tends to translate into gradual investment.” He noted that the scale of long-term gains will depend on last-mile connectivity, supporting infrastructure and a balanced tolling framework to ensure consistent usage and broader economic benefits.
