Indians Turn To Europe As US Loses Ground On Higher Education: Report

Indian students are increasingly choosing European countries over the United States for higher education, according to a new report by education financing platform GyanDhan.
The report shows the share of Indian students heading to the US falling from 54 per cent in 2023 to 20 per cent in 2025, marking a 63 per cent decline. Rising tuition fees, stricter immigration rules, and uncertainty over post-study visas are cited as key factors driving the shift.
“Students are making pragmatic, return-on-investment-driven choices,” said Ankit Mehra, Co-founder and CEO of GyanDhan. “Visa uncertainties and policy changes in the US are prompting many to explore destinations that offer affordability and clear work pathways.”
European countries are emerging as clear winners. The UK’s share rose from 16 per cent to 39 per cent, Germany’s from 4 per cent to 9 per cent, and Ireland’s from 3 per cent to 7.6 per cent. Germany attracts Stem students with low tuition and defined work options, while Ireland benefits from its growing tech and finance sectors.
Other destinations show mixed trends. Australia’s share remains steady at 7 per cent, while Canada’s fell sharply from 11 per cent to 2.3 per cent. Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea are also drawing interest due to friendlier visa policies and clear pathways from education to employment.
Affordability, job prospects, and policy clarity have become key considerations for Indian students planning higher studies abroad.
