Eyewitnesses describe massive impact

According to Sanjay Bhargava, president of the Chandni Chowk Sarv Vyapar Mandal (traders’ association), the blast’s tremors could be felt as far as 700 to 900 metres from the site. “Buildings shook as if an earthquake had struck, there were bodies lying on the road – someone’s arm in one place, someone’s head in another,” Bhargava told IE.

Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort, where the explosion occurred, is located directly opposite the pedestrian stretch of Chandni Chowk. “All shops have now been closed. The roads are jam-packed, and there’s panic among shoppers. People are rushing to leave… there’s a long queue outside the market’s parking area as everyone is trying to get to their cars and exit as quickly as possible,” he added.
A team from the Delhi PoliceSpecial Cell has reached the site and is conducting investigations. Officials said further details will be shared once more information becomes available.
Delhi Police has closed entry and exit from Gates 1 and 4 of the Lal Quila (Red Fort) metro station. However, as of now, the metro station is functional, authorities confirmed to IE.

NSG commandos and police on site

A team of NSG commandos – India’s elite counter-terrorism force – has been rushed to the site to assess the situation and assist Delhi Police in the investigation.
Officials from the Delhi Police Special Cell are already present at the scene and forensic teams are examining the area to determine the cause and nature of the explosion.
Major explosives seized in Faridabad earlier in the day

Earlier in the day, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in coordination with Haryana Police, uncovered a massive cache of explosives and arms from an apartment in Haryana’s Faridabad. Officials confirmed that 360 kg of suspected ammonium nitrate and around 2,900 kg of IED-making material, including chemicals, detonators, wires and other bomb-making components, were seized.
Two individuals – Dr. Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie, an assistant professor at Al-Falah University in Faridabad and Dr. Adil Ahmad Rather, a doctor from Pulwama – were arrested in connection with the recovery. Authorities said the operation, under surveillance for more than two weeks, is one of the biggest terror-related recoveries in the Delhi-NCR region in recent years.

While officials have not yet confirmed any direct link between the Faridabad explosives seizure and the Red Fort explosion, security agencies are investigating both incidents together given their timing and proximity.
“It is an ongoing joint operation between Haryana Police and J&K Police. Around 360 kg of inflammable material, possibly ammonium nitrate, was recovered yesterday. It is not RDX. The operation is still underway,” Faridabad Police Commissioner Satender Kumar Gupta told reporters.
