A developing weather system over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 27, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue rainfall alerts across multiple states. The low-pressure depression is forecast to strengthen into a deep depression on October 26 before maturing into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal.
According to IMD weather bulletin from October 25 onward, moderate to heavy downpours are likely to take place over Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, Puducherry and Coastal Andhra Pradesh as the system progresses. Extremely heavy rains are predicted in isolated places of Coastal Andhra Pradesh on October 27 and October 28.

IMD rainfall alert for Bihar

In Bihar, Chhath Puja begins with the traditional Nahay-Khay ritual. As per the IMD Patna, a western disturbance is likely to impact the western Himalayan region on October 27, which may result in changes in Bihar’s weather forecast. The chances of rainfall in several areas are expected towards the end of the month. The IMD has also predicted that light drizzle may take place in several districts of Bihar during the Chhath festival.

Odisha is on high alert

Meanwhile, Odisha authorities are on high alert ahead of the approaching cyclonic storm. Coastal and southern districts are forecast to get heavy showers between October 27 and 29, along with wind speeds reaching 40-60 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea from October 26 onwards.
The weather department has also warned that rainfall activity will continue across Tamil Nadu, Karaikal and Puducherry into early next week. Gujarat, Jharkhand, Odisha and part of West Bengal are also expected to experience rain as the system tracks west-northwest. Fishermen across southern coastal belts have been directed to remain ashore because of rough sea conditions.
