A major tragedy was narrowly avoided late Thursday night when a drunk-driving incidentsent panic through one of Bengaluru’s busiest neighbourhoods. A 42-year-old software engineer lost control of his sedan, crossed the median on Indiranagar’s 100 Feet Road and crashed into the wall of a restaurant, as reported by Times of India. The accident occurred around 11.30 pm, when vehicles were still moving along the busy Indiranagar 100 Feet Road.

Around six people, including women, were standing outside the restaurant at the time. As the car stormed in their direction, they ran to safety just in time. Regardless of the close call, a youth sustained injuries and two vehicles were damaged in the crash.
Vehicle smashes into restaurant wall
According to the report, the sedan finally came to a halt after crashing into the wall of the Barbeque Nation outlet. The impact left the area shaken, with onlookers stunned at how narrowly lives were spared. Police identified the accused driver as Derrik Tony, a resident of Domlur. A software professional working with a private company, Tony was driving alone and returning home from a party. Police said he was subjected to an alcohol test, which confirmed that he was driving under the influence.

Police register case
Based on a complaint filed by Lal Mohammed, a staff member at the restaurant, the Jeevan Bhimanagar traffic police registered a case against Tony. As per Times of India, he was booked under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with charges of drunk driving under the Indian Motor Vehicles Act.
“A charge sheet will be filed against Tony under Sections 281, 125 and the Indian Motor Vehicles Act for drunk driving. His vehicle has been seized, and he will have to appear before a court and pay the fine before getting it released,” a senior traffic police officer told Times of India.
CCTV reveals rash driving
Another traffic police officer who visited the spot and investigated the case said the incident could have ended in disaster. “I must say it was very, very fortunate that other commuters and those standing outside the restaurant escaped being hit. Tony entered the 100 Feet Road from a side lane. CCTV footage shows him driving rashly in that lane. He was supposed to take a left turn on reaching the 100 Feet Road. Instead, he drove straight and jumped the median. A great tragedy was averted,” the officer told Times of India. |
