Large swathes of Tamil Nadu are set to receive heavy rainfall next week — with the India Meteorological Department sounding an orange alert for multiple areas on Monday. A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has weakened into a depression and is very likely to cross the north Sri Lanka coast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, with heavy rainfall expected at isolated places across several districts of Tamil Nadu. The Weather Department has also flagged the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning over Tamil Nadu, Karaikal, and Puducherry through January 12. An orange alert has also been issued.
Districts are likely to see heavy rain
The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places over Tiruvarur, Nagappattinam, Pudukkottai, Karaikal, Mayiladuthurai, Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Ramanathapuram, Villupuram, Thanjavur, because of the system. Heavy showers at isolated places on January 11, along with thunderstorms and lightning, are very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from January 11 to 12.

RMC Chennai also issues warnings
A warning issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai forecast moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning over Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur on Sunday morning. The bulletin also warned about waterlogging in some areas, possible traffic disruption, and slippery roads.
It also indicated light to moderate downpours over Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikla area, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam. Light rain has been forecast over Ranipet, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Salem, Kallakurichi, Namakkal, Karur, Thiruvannamalai, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Ariyalur, Villupuram, and Tiruchirapalli.

Advisory for fishermen
The IMD has forecast rough sea conditions over parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Indian Ocean. It is likely to improve gradually thereafter. The surface winds of 35-45 kmph at times over coastal Tamil Nadu, Karaikal, and Puducherry. Fishermen have been advised not to go into the sea, and those already at sea have been asked to avoid specified stretches, including waters off the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry, Comorin area, and the Gulf of Mannar, as per a report by PTI. |
