The Luthra brothers landed at Delhi Airport on Tuesday afternoon following a brief stay in Thailand and were promptly arrested by a Goa police team. The owners of Birch by Romeo Lane had fled the country last week as a devastating fire claimed at least 25 lives in their nightclub. A case of culpable homicide and negligence has been registered against Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra in connection with the fire.
Visuals shared online showed the duo wearing masks and being escorted by local police officials as they departed Bangkok earlier in the day. They were handed over to Indian authorities on arrival and subsequently produced before a Delhi court for further legal proceedings. The deportation comes days after the two were detained in Phuket on December 11 following the intervention of the Indian mission.

Abrupt escape and Interpol involvement

Indian authorities said the duo had taken an early morning flight to Phuket mere hours after tragedy struck on December 7. The development came to light after a police team was dispatched to conduct raids in Delhi — eventually pasting a notice on the gate of their house. Immigration records subsequently confirmed that they had departed via IndiGo flight 6E 1073. They were reportedly attending a wedding in Delhi at the time of the incident.

Indian authorities had subsequently sought Interpol assistance — with a Blue Corner Notice soon issued against the Luthra brothers. Meanwhile, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant passed orders for the razing of the Romeo Lane beach shack owned by the duo in Vagator. The Indian government had also cancelled the passports of the two brothers and submitted a dossier to Thai authorities alleging their involvement in the deaths of 25 people and formally sought their deportation.

High Court pursues PIL

The Bombay High Court on Monday converted a civil suit against the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub into a Public Interest Litigation, observing that “someone has to be held accountable” for the tragedy. In a stern observation, Goa bench of the High Court of Justices Sarang Kotwal and Ashish Chavan said the local panchayat had “failed to take suo motu cognisance” of the club and had taken “no action despite complaints.” The division bench directed the Goa government to file a detailed reply on the permissions granted to the nightclub.
The High Court, while fixing January 8 as the next date of hearing, pointed out that commercial operations were continuing in the structure despite it having been served a demolition order.
