In the 2020 Kerala local body polls, the Left Democratic Front(LDF) had a strong win and retained control over most local bodies. That year, voter turnout was 76.2%, slightly lower than 2015. The LDF won 40.2% of the votes—an increase from previous years—and secured 514 grama panchayats, 108 block panchayats, 11 district panchayats, 35 municipalities and 5 corporations.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) got 37.9% of the votes, with a slight drop from 2015. It won 321 grama panchayats, 38 block panchayats, 1 district panchayat, 23 municipalities and 1 corporation. The BJP-led NDA received 15% of the vote, gaining 1.7% compared to before and winning 19 grama panchayats along with small gains elsewhere.
This year’s results will be closely watched because they can influence the political environment ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Local body elections often reflect early public sentiment. In both 2010 and 2015, the ruling front lost local polls, and the Opposition went on to win the Assembly elections that followed. These 2025 polls also come just a year after the Lok Sabha elections, where the LDF again managed to win only one seat, repeating its 2019 result. |
