Saraswathi Samman awardee and renowned Kannada writer S.L. Bhyrappa, who died in Bengaluru on September 24, was cremated with full State honours in Mysuru on September 26.
Bhyrappa’s body was shifted from Bengaluru to Mysuru on September 25 and was kept for a few hours at Kalamandira where a large number of his admirers and other people paid their last respects.
Among them were senior political leaders, including former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Mysuru district-in-charge Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi, MLA T.S. Srivatsa, former MP Pratap Simha, and Mysuru district Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy..
On September 26, the body was taken to his house at Kuvempunagar, where he had lived for decades, to enable the local people to get a last glimpse of the departed writer. After some rituals, the mortal remains were shifted to the crematorium at the foot of Chamundi Hills.
As part of the State protocols, police fired three rounds in the air as a mark of respect to the deceased. The national flag draped on the body was removed, and handed over to the family.
The State protocol was followed by traditional rites after which the pyre was lit by his sons Ravi Shankar and Uday Shankar, and others.
Around 150 persons from his native village Santeshivara in Hassan district came to Mysuru to attend the funeral of Bhyrappa.
