Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala, offers several excellent fishing spots for both local fishermen and tourists. The coastal areas around Kovalam and Varkala are particularly popular for traditional fishing activities.
Local fishermen in Trivandrum use traditional Indian fishing nets called Chinese fishing nets, which are fixed land installations for fishing. These massive contraptions require at least four people to operate and are particularly common along the Trivandrum coastline.
Another local product used in fishing is the kattumaram, which are traditional fishing rafts made by tying logs together. These are still used by many local fishermen for inshore fishing activities. The fishing community also uses specially designed clay pots and baskets made from local materials for storing and transporting their catch.
Popular fishing locations include Shankumugham Beach, where you can see fishermen bringing in their daily catch early in the morning, and the Vizhinjam fishing harbor, which is one of the most important fishing centers in the region. |
