Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has given Megha Engineering and Infrastructures (MEIL) a contract worth USD 225.5 million to build a new gas sweetening and sulphur recovery plant in West Kuwait. The project will be carried out in two phases: an execution phase of 790 days, followed by a five-year operation and maintenance phase. KOC will retain the option to acquire the project back.

The plant, which is near Booster Station BS-171 in West Kuwait’s oilfields, will be able to treat up to 120 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of sour gas. This gas can contain up to 4 per cent hydrogen sulphide and 10 per cent carbon dioxide. The Sulphur Recovery Unit is a major part of the project. It will have two trains that can each handle 100 tonnes of sulphur per day, which will make the overall sulphur recovery efficiency 99.9 per cent. The purified gas will be dried and sent through KOC’s pipeline network to the Mina Ahmadi Refinery, where it will be processed further into cleaner fuel.
Kuwait is working to produce cleaner fuels and strengthen compliance with environmental regulations in the domestic energy sector. This facility is part of those efforts. Gas sweetening, which removes acidic gases such as hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide, makes operations safer and ensures that the processed gas meets all required standards. P. Doraiah, Director, MEIL, said that the project demonstrates MEIL’s capability to build complex hydrocarbon infrastructure and contribute to the Middle East’s long-term energy goals.
In addition to the Kuwait project, MEIL is building similar sulphur recovery units for the Rajasthan Refinery and the Mongol Refinery. This highlights how the company is expanding its expertise and influence in the hydrocarbon industry. MEIL has projects in Mongolia, Tanzania, Italy, and other countries across the water in the hydrocarbons and electricity sectors, which further strengthen its position as a leader in energy infrastructure and innovation.
