The alleged gangrape of a second-year medical student on a private college campus in West Bengal's Durgapur has led to political leaders trading barbs on social media after it invoked similarities to Kolkata's RG Kar rape case of 2024.
The victim's father alleged that one of his daughter's classmates had taken her out of the college campus on the pretext of eating some food.

However, the friend allegedly abandoned her after 2-3 men arrived and snatched her mobile phone away. They then raped the student in a forested area near the campus, as per an Indian Express Bengali report.
It added that the victim's father also claimed the accused demanded money to get her phone back, warning her against going to the police about the matter.
"In this sensitive matter, I strongly urge the Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal, @MamataOfficial, to take exemplary action against the accused as per the law," wrote Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi in a post on X.

Calling the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal a "safe haven for rapists and criminals", BJP leader and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar declared that the state had turned into a "nightmare for women's safety" under the CM's "failed and lawless rule".

"BJP is a political party, and such crimes against women should not be politicised. Unfortunately, the BJP always views such through a political lens, which is most unwarranted," fired back West Bengal minister Shashi Panja in a video.

The student is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, a police officer said.
After the victim's father criticised the security arrangements at the college, the father of the postgraduate student who was raped in 2024 at the RG Kar Medical College also spoke out, criticising the administration for "not doing its job properly".

"Despite all that's happening, a national report (NCRB) has come out calling West Bengal the safest. It has been ranked number one, calling it the safest state. We will challenge those who prepare these reports. How do they make these reports?" he questioned. |
