Nites Flags Wipro Onboarding Delays, Seeks Centre's Intervention

The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (Nites) has approached the Ministry of Labour and Employment, citing delays in the onboarding of nearly 250 engineering graduates despite issuing formal offer-related communications by the global IT services firm Wipro. As per the official complaint viewed by BW Businessworld on Monday, the IT employees’ body has sought government intervention, stating that candidates continue to remain in uncertainty for months, without formal communication from the company regarding their joining status.

According to Nites, the affected candidates are fresh graduates selected through campus and off-campus recruitment processes conducted by Wipro Limited, including its Turbo and NextGen Talent hiring programs. "Letters of Intent were issued to these candidates around May 2025, confirming their selection and detailing the role, compensation structure and onboarding process,” the official letter read.

“The Letters of Intent issued by the company did not clearly or transparently disclose that onboarding could be delayed indefinitely at the company’s discretion without any outer time limit. Critical conditions affecting the commencement of employment were not communicated upfront. Consequently, candidates formed a legitimate expectation of timely onboarding, which has been unjustly defeated. This is not an isolated grievance,” the letter added.

However, no response from Wipro has been received by Nites. “Wipro hasn't responded till now. Nites has received complaint of over 250 employees. This is not an isolated HR delay. It is a pan-India pattern of unfair recruitment practices that raises serious questions about corporate responsibility toward youth employment and deserves urgent Government attention,” Harpreet Singh Saluja, President, Nites, told BW Businessworld.

According to the complaints received by Nites, candidates have approached the IT Union from multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and other regions. Nites said, over a period of several months, the affected candidates repeatedly approached Wipro through official emails, calls and written representations seeking clarity regarding their onboarding status. In response, they either received no reply or were provided vague and automated responses referring to business demand, future batches or tentative timelines that were never honoured. No written explanation, confirmed onboarding date or formal cancellation has been issued to date.

Explaining the plight of the candidates to the Ministry, Nites said several candidates declined alternative job offers or were unable to pursue other employment due to campus placement rules after accepting Wipro’s offer. The union said families were facing financial stress, while candidates reported mental distress linked to prolonged delays.

Nites added that keeping selected candidates waiting indefinitely after issuing Letters of Intent, completing background verification and confirming joining details amounts to unfair recruitment practice, deficiency of service and violation of principles of fairness and natural justice. If left unaddressed, such practices risk becoming normalised across the industry, causing long-term harm to India’s youth workforce.
“What is particularly alarming is that while these candidates remain in an indefinite waiting period, Wipro Limited has continued onboarding other candidates. There has been no transparency regarding prioritisation, no objective criteria disclosed and no accountability demonstrated. This has created a widespread perception of arbitrariness and unequal treatment among similarly placed candidates,” the letter further added.

BW Businessworld reached out to Wipro for comment, and the story will be updated once it responds.
