Boat races are an integral part of Indian culture, especially in the southern state of Kerala. The most famous boat race is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, which takes place in the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. This annual event features massive snake boats, known as Chundan Vallams, which can hold up to 100 rowers. The race is a spectacular display of teamwork, rhythm, and traditional music.
Another notable boat race is the Aranmula Boat Race, held in the Pamba River near the Aranmula Temple. This race is part of a religious festival and features Palliyodams, which are traditional boats dedicated to the deity Lord Krishna. The rowers sing traditional vanchipattu （boat songs） as they paddle in unison, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere.
In addition to these, the Champakulam Moolam Boat Race is one of the oldest boat races in Kerala, dating back to the 16th century. It marks the installation of the deity at the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple.
