Who was Gopichand Hinduja?

Born on January 29, 1940, when he joined the Hinduja Group in 1959, the family business was still rooted in Indo–Middle Eastern trade.

Over the following decades, his vision and business acumen expanded its horizons across continents and industries. The group made some of its most defining moves, including major acquisitions of Gulf Oil in 1984 and Ashok Leyland in 1987, both of which led to a new era of NRI-led investment in India.
He was the second of four Hinduja brothers, who together built and managed the group founded by their father in 1919.
Following the passing of his elder brother Srichand Hinduja, Gopichand assumed the role of chairman in May 2023, guiding the family’s vast network of businesses in a global direction.
A British citizen, Hinduja was consistently listed as the UK’s wealthiest businessman, topping the Sunday Times Rich List.
The Hindujas were known for their influential presence in London’s real estate landscape, owning iconic properties such as the Old War Office building, now home to the luxurious Raffles London hotel, and Carlton House Terrace near Buckingham Palace. He is survived by his wife, Sunita; sons Sanjay and Dheeraj; and daughter, Rita.
