Bengaluru's AI Billboard Becomes 'Wall Of Shame' For Pending Traffic Challans

Bengaluru's Trinity Circle has become a center of attraction on the internet for India's first AI-powered billboard, which displays pending traffic fines. Based on reports, the initiative has been launched by Bengaluru Traffic Police in collaboration with Cars24 and CrashFree India. It functions using Artificial Intelligence cameras used for scanning vehicle number plates within 100 meters.
In just ten seconds, information is collected from the VAHAN database, showcasing details about outstanding challans, expired Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, and lapsed insurance on the LED screen. Along with this, the compliant vehicles are also highlighted to encourage responsible driving.

The Bengaluru traffic police believe that this real-time display could have a significant impact on behavior. By swiftly demonstrating the consequences of non-compliance to drivers, officials hope to promote more responsible driving habits, as noted by a senior official involved in the program.
This innovative awareness initiative has been launched due to concerning statistics regarding traffic violations in the city. Over a recent three-week period, from August 23 to September 12, more than 3.78 million traffic violations were documented, leading to fines totaling Rs 106 crore. This surge in fines was partially attributed to a temporary 50 percent reduction in outstanding challans provided by the state government.

The display draws the attention of passersby and makes accountability clear. Reactions on social media range from humor to sarcasm, with some users making jokes about the display while others suggest improvements, such as tracking potholes, ambulances, or instances of driving on the wrong side.
A social media user commented on X, saying, "Bengaluru's new AI billboard at Trinity Circle is basically a high-tech 'Wall of Shame' for traffic fines. Forget potholes, let's just flex our VAHAN database and make drivers sweat in 4K. Next up: a leaderboard for who's got the most challans?"
