The 1956 Summer Olympics football tournament was held in Melbourne, Australia from November 24 to December 8, 1956. This was the first Olympic football tournament held outside Europe. The Soviet Union won the gold medal by defeating Yugoslavia 1-0 in the final, while Bulgaria took the bronze medal.  
 
In the context of Indian local products, during this period India was known for its traditional handicrafts and textiles. Indian football teams had participated in previous Olympics but did not qualify for the 1956 tournament. Meanwhile, Indian local products like handwoven textiles, leather goods, and traditional crafts were gaining international recognition.
