Ashok Leyland, the Hinduja Group flagship and India’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, has secured an order from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings (TNSTU) to supply 1,937 buses at a contract value of Rs 669 crore.
The order, awarded through a regular tender process, strengthens Ashok Leyland’s long-standing partnership with TNSTU and reinforces its position as a dominant player in India’s bus industry. The company is the preferred brand of TNSTU, with over 21,000 buses already operational in the state’s fleet.
The supply includes BSVI diesel chassis, low-floor, and semi-low-floor fully built buses tailored for town, mofussil, and SETC services. All vehicles are built on AIS 153-compliant chassis, meeting the latest Indian safety and performance standards, while enhancing structural integrity, ride comfort, and reliability.
Of the total order, 1,701 BS VI diesel chassis and low-floor fully built buses will be delivered between October 2025 and March 2026, while 236 semi low-floor BSVI buses are scheduled for delivery between September 2026 and January 2027.
The new buses will feature Ashok Leyland’s iGen6 BS VI technology and a range of modern enhancements, including upgraded batteries and alternators for advanced ITMS, electronic stability control on high-speed mofussil and SETC buses, and improved passenger comfort through air suspension and optimised floor heights. Urban low-entry and semi low-floor buses will also feature auto transmission and wheelchair ramps to ensure accessibility.
Madhavi Deshmukh, National Sales Head–MHCV, said, “Tamil Nadu has always been an important market for us. This order reflects the trust and confidence our customers place in Ashok Leyland’s technology and performance and reinforces our commitment to efficient and technologically advanced public transport solutions.”
Mohan K, Head Bus–MHCV, added, “These advanced buses, equipped with the latest safety, technology, and comfort features, underline our commitment to providing reliable and sustainable mobility solutions for the people of Tamil Nadu.”
Ashok Leyland, the world’s fourth-largest bus manufacturer, further strengthens its position in India’s bus market with this order. Shares of the company were trading at Rs 137.60 on the BSE, up Rs 1.95, at the time of reporting. |
