The sale of platform tickets was halted at New Delhi, Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar, and Ghaziabad by the Northern Railway. It has been instructed that people accompanying senior citizens, differently-abled, illiterate, or lady passengers are to be excused. A similar precaution is in place at Mumbai CSMT and Bandra Terminus as well.
Platform tickets will be unavailable from October 15 to 28, 2025, at the said stations so that the risk of overcrowding can be avoided. With the festivals of Diwali and Chhath approaching, the Northern Railway is expecting heavy footfall in New Delhi, Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar, and Ghaziabad stations. Controlling the public inside the stations is the only way to avoid accidents caused by crowds. It was in February that a stampede claimed the lives of at least 18 people at the New Delhi railway station due to a platform panic over an approaching train.
However, people who are exemptions should approach the enquiry counter and state their business so that they will be provided with platform tickets, news agency PTI reported, quoting Railway sources.
While Chhath is celebrated between October 25 and October 28 this year, Diwali falls on October 20, Monday.
The restriction on the platform ticket sale will be in effect from October 15 to 31 at the Bandra Terminus in Mumbai, and Vapi, Udhna, and Surat stations in adjoining Gujarat, a Western Railway (WR) release said on Monday.
Following the lines of WR, the Central Railway (CR) has also imposed a temporary restriction on platform ticket sales at major stations in the Mumbai division to avoid overcrowding. The temporary restriction on platform ticket sales will be in force at Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Dadar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Thane, Kalyan, and Panvel stations, a CR release said on Tuesday. |
