At least 20 people were killed after a Jodhpur-bound private bus carrying 57 passengers caught fire near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Around 16 others were injured.
The bus left from Jaisalmer around 3 pm. On the way, the driver noticed smoke from the rear and stopped the vehicle on the roadside. It immediately caught fire and burst into flames with passengers trapped inside.

Local residents rushed to the rescue of the trapped passengers as the fire brigade and police were alerted. Army personnel also helped in the rescue operation.
Ambulances carried the burn victims to nearby hospitals for treatment. Several of the injured are in critical condition and the death toll is expected to rise. Police are looking at the cause of the blaze.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma arrived at the spot to review the situation and inspect the bus. “The incident of the bus catching fire in Jaisalmer is extremely tragic. I express my heartfelt condolences to the citizens affected by this unfortunate accident," he posted on X.
"Directions have been given to concerned officials for the proper treatment of the injured and to extend every possible help to the victims," he added.
Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot also condoled the "unfortunate" incident.
District Collector Pratap Singh has directed officials to ensure proper medical care for the victims.
The district administration has asked relatives of the victims to ascertain their identity. The bodies will be handed over to family members after DNA matching. Helpline numbers were also issued. |
