The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has delivered a decisive mandate in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 206 of 293 seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, was reduced to 81. With the BJP set to form its first government in the state, attention has now turned to the leadership question, particularly who will take over as chief minister.
Among the names being discussed is Agnimitra Paul, a leader who transitioned from a successful career in fashion into active politics. In the 2026 polls, she retained her Asansol Dakshin seat, defeating TMC candidate Tapas Banerjee by 40,839 votes, according to Election Commission data. Polling in the constituency was held on 23 April.
Born on 25 November 1974, in Asansol, Paul comes from an academic and medical background and is the daughter of paediatrician, Dr Ashok Roy. She studied Botany before pursuing a diploma in Fashion Technology from the Birla Institute of Liberal Arts and Management Sciences and later completing an MBA from TDB College. She also attended Jadavpur University during her academic journey.
From Fashion To Politics
Before entering public life, Paul established herself as a prominent fashion designer and entrepreneur in Kolkata. She launched her label “Inga” and designed costumes for Bollywood films such as Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe and Via Darjeeling. Her work was also showcased at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013. Over the years, she styled several well-known personalities, including Sridevi, Mithun Chakraborty, Kay Kay Menon, Esha Deol and Sonali Kulkarni. She also designed shawls and blankets that were presented to Hillary Clinton.
Paul joined the BJP in 2019 and rose rapidly within the organisation, becoming president of its Mahila Morcha. During her tenure, she led self-defence training initiatives for women across 23 districts. Known for her assertive style, she made her electoral debut in 2021, defeating TMC’s Saayoni Ghosh to enter the Assembly.
She later became general secretary and was appointed vice-president of the BJP’s West Bengal unit on January 2026. Known for her grassroots outreach and visibility, she has built a strong political presence in Asansol Dakshin.
Paul has also contested parliamentary elections, including the 2022 Asansol bypoll and the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Medinipur, finishing second to Shatrughan Sinha and June Malia, respectively. During the 2026 campaign, she focused on issues such as industrial stagnation in Paschim Bardhaman and women’s safety, and also alleged an attack on her convoy.
Affidavit And Finance
According to her 2026 affidavit, she declared assets of around Rs 3.85 crore and liabilities of approximately Rs 1.20 crore, along with 11 pending cases largely linked to political protests. The Asansol Dakshin constituency, part of the state’s coal belt, remains central to her development pitch, including plans for an apparel and textile park.
According to media reports, while Suvendu Adhikari is widely viewed as a frontrunner for the chief minister’s post, discussions within the BJP have also explored the option of appointing a woman leader. This would mirror the party’s strategy in Delhi, where Rekha Gupta was elevated despite being a relatively lesser-known face.
If the BJP adopts a similar approach in West Bengal, Agnimitra Paul’s growing profile as a prominent woman leader could place her firmly in contention.
The 2026 Assembly elections were held in two phases on 23 April and 29 April, recording a voter turnout of 92.93 per cent, with women participation exceeding that of men. The outcome marks a significant political shift, with the BJP securing a comfortable majority and Mamata Banerjee losing her Bhabanipur seat to Suvendu Adhikari. |
