Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said Hindi should not just be a language of conversation or administration, but should also become a language of science, technology, the judiciary and the police.
“When this work happens in Indian languages, the connection with citizens increases automatically,” he said at an event on Hindi Diwas.
September 14 is observed as Hindi Diwas to commemorate the Constituent Assembly of India adopting Hindi as the official language of the Union government.
Speaking at an event in Gujarat on Sunday, Shah said that Hindi is “not a competitor, but a friend” of other Indian languages.
“There is no conflict between Hindi and other Indian languages,” he said, adding that Gujarat was an example where both Gujarati and Hindi have coexisted and developed together.

Shah said Hindi has a place in education in Gujarat, where children learn, speak and study it.
“Which is why children of Gujarat have great acceptance across the country,” he said. “A child from Gujarat can go to any part of the country and easily conduct trade and also gain acceptance.”
He added that leaders like MK Gandhi, Dayanand Saraswati, Vallabhbhai Patel, KM Munshi and Umashankar Joshi had called for the use of regional languages for conversation, and for Hindi to be promoted in every state.
Shah urged parents to speak to their children in their mother tongue for the sake of their future.
In June, the home minister had said that those who speak English in India would soon “feel ashamed” and that the creation of such a society was not far away.
This came against the backdrop of several state governments and regional parties accusing the Centre of imposing Hindi through the National Education Policy’s three-language formula.
