Northern India is set to get heavy rain and snowfall on Thursday as temperatures fall and foggy conditions prevail. The India Meteorological Departmenthas sounded a multi-state yellow alert till Saturday and forecast ” cold wave conditions” with “dense fog” in many areas. The weather department has also issued a warning for Delhi-NCR.
The Weather Department has forecast a fresh spell of wintry weather in northwest India as a new Western Disturbance is likely to affect the region starting from the night of January 30, 2026. As per the IMD, the system is expected to affect the Western Himalayan region from January 31 to February 2, with a possibility of heavy rainfall/snowfall on February 1.
The Met Department also predicted that light to moderate showers is likely over the plains of northwest India and adjoining central India from January 31 to February 2.  The IMD has also warned about dense fog conditions that may prevail during morning hours in isolated pockets over northwest India, adjoining central India, and parts of east India till February 2.


IMD prediction for rain, snow and gusty winds for hills and adjoining areas

Under the influence of Western Disturbance, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/snowfall is expected to take place over the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of northwest India on February 1. Thunderstorms, gusty winds, with speed upto 30-40 kmph will also accompany. Isolated light downpours are also predicted for Rajasthan on January 31 and February 1.

The weather department has also flagged isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall over Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Gilgit, Muzaffarabad, and Baltistan on February 1. The overall spell may extend across the northwest and adjoining central parts, with light to moderate showers expected over the plains from January 31 to February 2.
IMD warns of cold wave and fog

On fog, IMD said dense fog is likely during night/early hours in isolated pockets over Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Odisha till January 30. Similar conditions will persist over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh till January 31. Dense fog is also expected in isolated pockets over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Bihar during January 30–31.

IMD further warned of cold wave conditions in isolated pockets over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh during January 28–31.
Delhi-NCR on yellow alert

For Delhi, Chandigarh, and Haryana, the Regional Meteorological Centre (New Delhi) issued a yellow alert for dense fog and cold wave conditions at isolated places. As per the forecast shared, Delhi’s maximum temperature is 17–19 degrees Celsius and minimum 6–8 degrees Celsius, with a partly cloudy sky, moderate fog in many places, and dense fog at isolated locations during morning hours.
