Lok Sabha MP and former union minister Anurag Thakur addressed students at the Kullhad Economy Fest (KEF) hosted by IIT Mandi on Friday, where he emphasised the role of youth in driving India’s startup ecosystem, digital transformation, and local economic development through entrepreneurship.Referring to India's expanding startup landscape, Thakur said, who was speaking as chief guest, the number of startups had grown from 350 to over 1.59 lakh, with 127 recognised as unicorns. He also highlighted India’s leadership in digital payments through platforms like UPI and BHIM, linking them to broader national initiatives like “Make in India.”

Thakur urged students to explore solutions that use technology to empower rural areas and small businesses. "Think about how you can take technology to the village level," he said, encouraging ideas around branding, marketing, and sustainability in line with the “Vocal for Local” campaign. The former minister also mentioned India’s recent achievements in space, its cultural heritage, and the ongoing relevance of swadeshi manufacturing. He said initiatives like GST reform and schemes like “Mera Yuva Bharat” are aimed at bringing young Indians into the national development narrative.

IIT Mandi director prof Laxmidhar Behera along with event convenor prof Ajay Chaturvedi, and the student body welcomed his message of innovation and national contribution.

The Kullhad Economy Fest is being held on the IIT Mandi campus with a focus on entrepreneurship, sustainability, and culture, combining academic discussions with local economic themes.
