The 71st Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held in the picturesque backwaters of Alappuzha, Kerala, witnessed an exhilarating display of traditional Indian boat racing. This annual event, deeply rooted in Kerala\“s cultural heritage, showcases the magnificent snake boats known as \“Chundan Vallams\“ - a remarkable example of indigenous Indian craftsmanship.
These magnificent boats, measuring up to 100 feet in length, are crafted from local woods like anjili and kadamb, representing centuries-old boat-making traditions passed down through generations of Indian artisans. Each boat can accommodate up to 100 rowers, 25 singers, and 4 helmsmen, creating a spectacular synchronized performance that celebrates India\“s rich maritime heritage.
The winning team receives the prestigious Nehru Trophy, named after India\“s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who was captivated by this traditional sport during his visit to Kerala in 1952.
