Two weeks after the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the Assam Police on Thursday arrested musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahant in connection with the incident. Their arrests came days after they were questioned by the Assam CID regarding the musician’s death in Singapore.
"We have found some evidence against them. So, to enquire further, their arrest was necessary," an officer said, adding that the duo were present with Garg at the time of the murder. They face charges that include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence.
Who is Amrit Prabha Mohanta
The famous Assamese singer, Amrit Prabha, was part of the team that was in Singapore for the event. She was also on board with Garg at the yacht party in Singapore on September 19.
According to local media reports, Amrit Prabha was the one who recorded Zubeen Garg's final moments swimming in waters off St John’s Island in Singapore. The fragmented video of the incident had gone viral after the death of Garg on social media.

Amrit Prabha’s name didn’t initially come to the fore, despite her being on the team. The singer too was mum on the death, even after a controversy broke out over the death of Garg, according to Assamese daily Asomiya Pratidin.
As the investigation progressed, the CID summoned Amrit Prabha for questioning along with Shakharjyoti. The fact that their statements differed also prompted the investigating officials to arrest them. Unconfirmed reports claim the CID felt one of the two was lying to them.
According to the report, the CID is also seeking answers as to why Amrit Pravha released the entire video of the incident on social media in fragments. The CID seized Amrit Prabha's phone on the first day of her interrogation.
Zubeen Garg's wife, Garima Saikia Garg, too had questioned Amrit Prabha’s involvement. “Amritprabha Mahanta was the one making all the videos that are now circulating. Why didn’t she inform us or the police about anything?, asked Garima Saikia.
There are also allegations that Amrit Prabha, who claimed to know nothing in the interviews, definitely knows where Zubeen was the previous night, how he was taken to the yatch.
It is also alleged that she shared the videos with a businessman who went to Singapore’s Northeast Festival along with the team. It was the latter who shared the videos to all media houses.
