The incident in Malegaon, where a three-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and murdered, is a serious matter. Criminals in the state no longer fear the law, and incidents of atrocities against women have increased. Harshwardhan Sapkal, president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), has demanded that the Malegaon case be tried in a fast-track court and that the accused be given the death penalty.
Reacting to the matter, Sapkal said that the law-and-order situation in the state is extremely worrying. The "koyta gangs," drug mafia, sand mafia, extortionists, and khokha syndicates are running rampant. With the blessings of the ruling party, goons roam freely. From incidents in the past few months, it appears that hooliganism has flourished with the government's support. Mafia, criminals, and corrupt individuals are being granted entry into the ruling party and being given a clean chit. When the government itself offers royal protection to criminals, their morale is bound to rise—and the government seems entirely unconcerned. The police are being used only to act against Opposition members, intimidate Opposition leaders, and tap the phones of political opponents.
