Actor-politician Vijay on Sunday announced Rs 20 lakh financial aid for the families of all 39 who lost their lives in the stampede that occurred at a rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief said his party will provide Rs 2 lakh each to the nearly 100 people injured in the tragedy.
Calling it an "irreparable loss", Vijay expressed profound grief over the incident that took place during his public rally on Saturday. "My heart and mind are overwhelmed with profound heaviness. I express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for a speedy recovery for those who are undergoing treatment in the hospital," he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Earlier, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of those who died in the stampede, and Rs 1 lakh for those who sustained injuries. The Tamil Nadu government has announced a commission to be headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan to probe the circumstances that led to the stampede, he said.
