The European Super League was a proposed football competition that involved several top clubs from across Europe. The original plan included 12 founding members: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid from Spain; Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham from England; and Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan from Italy.
These teams were selected based on their historical success, global fan base, and commercial appeal. The proposal aimed to create a closed competition where these founding members would have permanent spots, reducing the risk of relegation that exists in traditional domestic leagues.
However, the announcement in April 2021 faced immediate backlash from fans, football governing bodies, and governments. Within days, all six English clubs withdrew from the project, followed by other teams, leading to the collapse of the initial proposal.
Despite the initial failure, some clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus continued to push for the concept, arguing it would improve the financial stability of top clubs and provide higher quality matches for fans worldwide. |
