പനമരം∙ കനത്ത മഴയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം പുഴയിൽ വെള്ളം താഴ്ന്നതോടെ പനമരം വലിയ പുഴയുടെ കൈവഴികൾ ആയ ചെറുപുഴകളിൽ മുതലകളുടെയും ചീങ്കണ്ണികളുടെയും എണ്ണം കൂടി. ചെറിയ പുഴകളുടെ മണൽത്തിട്ടകളിലും കരകളിലും മുതലയും ചീങ്കണ്ണികളും കയറിക്കിടക്കുന്നത് പതിവ് കാഴ്ചയായി. വലിയ പുഴകളിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന മുതലകൾ വെള്ളപ്പൊക്ക സമയത്ത് ചെറിയ പുഴകളിലേക്ക് നീങ്ങിയതാണു ഇപ്പോൾ ചെറിയ പുഴകളിൽ ഇവയുടെ ശല്യം വർധിക്കാൻ കാരണമെന്ന് നാട്ടുകാർ പറയുന്നു.

കഴിഞ്ഞദിവസം ചീക്കല്ലൂർ പാലത്തിന് സമീപത്തെ മണൽതിട്ടയിൽ ഒരു മണിക്കൂറിലേറെ സമയം ഒരു മുതല വാ തുറന്നു പിടിച്ച് കയറിക്കിടന്നിരുന്നു. പനമരം, കബനി, കാവടം, വെണ്ണിയോട് പുഴകളിലാണ് മുതലകളും ചീങ്കണ്ണികളും ഏറെയുള്ളത്. ആവശ്യത്തിലധികം തീറ്റ ലഭിക്കുന്നതും മുതലകൾക്ക് വളരാൻ പറ്റിയ കാലാവസ്ഥയുമാണു ഇവ പെരുകാൻ കാരണം.
രാത്രി കാലങ്ങളിൽ മാലിന്യം വ്യാപകമായി പുഴകളിൽ തള്ളുന്ന ഭാഗങ്ങളിലാണു ചീങ്കണ്ണികൾ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ഉള്ളത്. പുഴകളിൽ അനിയന്ത്രിതമായി പെരുകുന്ന മുതലകളെ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാനുള്ള നടപടി വേണമെന്നാണ് നാട്ടുകാരുടെ ആവശ്യം.
