Boat racing is a popular traditional sport in many parts of India, particularly in the southern state of Kerala. The most famous boat race is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race held annually in the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha district.

These traditional snake boats, known as Chundan Vallams, are made from local wood and can accommodate up to 100 rowers. The boats are typically 100-138 feet long and are crafted by skilled local artisans using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

Other notable boat races in India include the Champakulam Moolam Boat Race, Aranmula Uthrattadi Vallamkali, and Payippad Jalotsavam. These events attract thousands of spectators and are deeply rooted in local culture and traditions.

The boat races are often accompanied by traditional music, with singers and drummers setting the rhythm for the rowers. The events are usually held during the monsoon season when the backwaters are full, creating perfect conditions for racing. |
