The traditional boat races of Kerala are one of the most spectacular water sport events in India. These races feature long, snake-like boats known as chundan vallams or snake boats, which can accommodate over 100 rowers.

These boat races are deeply rooted in Kerala\“s culture and are usually held during the harvest festival of Onam. The most famous among them is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race held in Alappuzha, attracting thousands of spectators from around the world.

The boats used in these races are magnificent examples of Kerala\“s traditional craftsmanship. Made from high-quality wood like anjili and jackfruit wood, these boats are constructed without using any nails, following ancient techniques passed down through generations.

Each boat represents a village, and the races foster strong community spirit and healthy competition. The synchronized rowing, accompanied by traditional vanchipattu (boat songs), creates an electrifying atmosphere that showcases Kerala\“s rich cultural heritage. |
