India’s electronics exports are witnessing a major shift, with smartphones emerging as the country’s largest exported commodity in the last financial year, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday.
Addressing the CII Annual Business Summit 2026, Vaishnaw said traditional export leaders such as diesel, gems and jewellery, textiles and engineered goods are now being joined by electronics as a fast-growing category.
According to the minister, electronics exports have entered the top three export segments from India, reflecting the rapid expansion of domestic manufacturing capacity and global demand for Indian-made devices.
He said India also exported electronics components worth around Rs 30,000 crore to neighbouring countries during the last financial year, calling it a significant transformation in the country’s manufacturing ecosystem.
Vaishnaw said 71 electronics component manufacturing facilities are currently operational or under development across the country. Several of these projects are in advanced stages of construction and are expected to help India meet a substantial portion of domestic demand.
Semiconductor Push Accelerates
The minister said many Indian manufacturers are preparing to integrate into global value chains and expand exports further. He urged companies to focus on quality standards, Six Sigma practices, lean manufacturing and product design to remain globally competitive over the long term.
On semiconductor manufacturing, Vaishnaw said two semiconductor facilities have already entered commercial production. A third plant is expected to begin production in July, while a fourth unit could start operations by November or December this year.
He added that changing global supply chains and geopolitical uncertainties are creating opportunities for India in emerging technologies. Referring to micro LED technology, Vaishnaw said India is aiming to position itself early in the sector and could begin production of micro LED screens within the next 22 months. |
