Tamil Nadu poll results: MK Stalin loses to TVK candidate from Kolathur

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin lost the Kolathur constituency in northern Chennai by more than 8,700 votes. VS Babu, the candidate from the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won the seat.
In recent years, the Kolathur seat had been a DMK stronghold, with MK Stalin representing it since 2011. In 2021, he won the constituency by more than 70,000 votes against Aadi Rajaram of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Meanwhile, after 17 rounds of counting, MK Stalin’s son Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, was leading against TVK’s Selvam D by more than 7,140 votes from the Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni seat in central Chennai. There will be 17 rounds of counting.

Udhayanidhi Stalin became an MLA for the first time in 2021 when he won the Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni constituency. He was appointed as a Cabinet minister in December 2022, and became the deputy chief minister in September 2024.
At the state level, as of 6.20 pm, actor Vijay’s newly-launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam had surged ahead of both traditional Dravidian parties, the DMK and AIADMK.
The TVK was ahead in 79 seats and had won 30, while the DMK was leading in 49 seats and won 12. The AIADMK was leading in 39 seats and had won six.
A party or an alliance needs 118 seats to secure a majority.
The TVK is making its political debut in this year’s Assembly election.
