Joram Aniya, an academician from Arunachal Pradesh and Head of the Hindi Department at Dera Natung Government College, has been appointed a full-time member of the Niti Aayog, marking a significant moment for indigenous scholarship and regional representation in the country’s premier policy body.
Aniya’s inclusion in the think tank comes as part of a broader revamp announced on 24 April, when the government appointed a new vice-chairman and replaced four of the five full-time members. The exercise is being described as the first major restructuring of the policy institution since its inception in 2015, when it replaced the Planning Commission.
An accomplished academician and associate professor, Aniya also serves as a member of the Arunachal Pradesh Private Educational Regulatory Commission. She has over 18 years of experience spanning teaching, research and engagement with public policy.
Officials familiar with the development described her appointment as “historic”, noting that she is the first woman from the Nyishi community to earn a PhD and the first scholar in Arunachal Pradesh to obtain a doctorate in Hindi. Her academic work has focused extensively on literature, culture and indigenous knowledge systems, particularly those of the Nyishi community.
Aniya has authored and edited several books on Nyishi literature and culture and published numerous research papers, establishing herself as a prominent voice in documenting and interpreting indigenous traditions through the lens of language and scholarship.
According to the report, her induction as a full-time member is being viewed as a milestone as it brings a prominent intellectual from Arunachal Pradesh into one of the country’s highest decision-making platforms for policy formulation and strategic planning.
The reshuffle also saw eminent economist Ashok Lahiri replace Suman Berry as vice-chairman of the Aayog. Other new full-time members include Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, and M Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, according to a government notification.
The development assumes added significance at a time when China has repeatedly attempted to rename places in Arunachal Pradesh, claiming them as part of its territory. India has firmly rejected these moves, reiterating that Arunachal Pradesh was and remains an inalienable part of the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Aniya and fellow appointee R. Balasubramaniam on their appointment as full-time members of the Aayog.
“Congratulations to R. Balasubramaniam Ji and Joram Aniya Ji on being appointed as Full-time Members of Niti Aayog. Their rich experience and deep understanding of various issues will greatly strengthen policy-making. I am confident their contributions will help drive innovation and growth across sectors. Wishing them a very productive and impactful tenure ahead,” the Prime Minister posted on X.
Aniya’s appointment is thus being seen not only as personal recognition of her academic and cultural contributions but also as a symbolic step towards deeper inclusion of voices from India’s Northeast and indigenous commuNities in national policymaking.
