India on Monday said discussions are ongoing with both Iran and the United States regarding the future of the Chabahar port project, following the expiry of the US sanctions waiver on 26 April. New Delhi also flagged the ongoing regional conflict as a complicating factor.
Responding to queries, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the matter remains under active consideration with both countries, and further updates will be shared as the situation evolves.
The Chabahar port initiative is a key strategic project aimed at enhancing connectivity to Afghanistan and strengthening trade links with Central Asia, supporting regional economic development.
Earlier, the US had withdrawn the sanctions exemption granted in 2018 under the Iran Freedom and Counter Proliferation Act, though it later provided a conditional extension until 26 April 2026 after consultations with India.
The government has maintained that it remains engaged with all stakeholders to assess and address the implications arising from these developments.
