Jio Financial Services and Germany’s Allianz said on Wednesday they had signed a binding agreement to form a 50:50 primary insurance joint venture in India, targeting the country’s fast-growing general and health insurance market.
The proposed venture, first announced in July 2025, will combine Jio Financial Services’ digital platforms and distribution reach with Allianz’s global insurance expertise, the companies said in a joint statement. Operations will begin after securing statutory and regulatory approvals.
The partners said the venture aims to offer comprehensive and technology-driven insurance products to individuals and businesses, aligning with India’s policy goal of achieving “Insurance for All by 2047”.
India remains one of the world’s most underinsured major economies, even as rising incomes, digital adoption and policy support drive strong growth in insurance demand.
The companies said they are also working towards a separate binding agreement to enter India’s life insurance segment.
Mukesh D. Ambani, chairman of Jio Financial Services, said the partnership reflects the group’s long-held philosophy of making essential services widely accessible. “The combination of Jio’s digital consumer reach and Allianz’s global insurance expertise is uniquely powerful,” he said, adding that the venture would aim to deliver affordable and easy-to-understand insurance products across the country.
Allianz Chief Executive Oliver Bäte said the group, which has operated in India since 2000, sees the partnership as a way to expand access to protection and strengthen long-term financial security. “Together, we will help build a more resilient and financially secure future for India,” he said.
The Indian insurance sector has attracted renewed interest from global insurers as regulatory reforms and digital distribution open up new growth opportunities in the world’s most populous nation. |
