Japan’s Proterial will set up India’s first manufacturing facility for amorphous electrical steel, investing up to USD 80 million in the first phase as it looks to tap the rising global demand for energy-efficient power infrastructure.
The company said it will establish a production site in Andhra Pradesh to manufacture Metglas, an amorphous metal material used in transformer cores that can cut power losses by 20-30 per cent compared with conventional electrical steel.
The plant will be operated by Metglas (India) Private Limited, a joint venture in which Proterial will hold a 74 per cent stake, with the remaining 26 per cent owned by India’s Shirdi Sai Electricals. The venture was incorporated in June 2025.
Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in January 2026 at Sri City, Tirupati, with commercial operations expected to start by October 2026. Initial production capacity is planned at about 30,000 tonnes per year.
Proterial said the investment will be made in two phases, with USD 77-80 million earmarked for the first phase and a further USD 155-160 million planned for expansion. The facility is expected to employ between 200 and 500 people.
Amorphous metals are produced by rapidly cooling molten metal, preventing atoms from forming a crystalline structure. The resulting material offers superior soft magnetic properties, making it well suited for transformer cores and magnetic components used for noise suppression.
The India plant will complete Proterial’s three-region production footprint spanning the United States, Japan and India, as the company seeks to meet growing global demand for electricity while reducing energy losses across power grids.
The company said local production would also eliminate India’s dependence on imported amorphous electrical steel, supporting domestic transformer manufacturing and energy-efficiency goals.
