A 33-year-old college teacher was stabbed to death following a brief argument inside a local train at Malad railway stationon Saturday evening, police said. The victim, identified as Alok Singh, was attacked in the stomach with a sharp object.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Sunday arrested a man in connection with the murder. The accused has been identified as Omkar Shinde and police said further investigation is underway, according to a report by The Times of India.
Who was Alok Singh?

Alok Singh, 33, was a junior college teacher at Narsee Monjee Collegeof Commerce and Economics, where he had been teaching mathematics and statistics since 2024.
Singh lived in Malad East with his wife and had got married only a couple of years ago. Family members said he was a simple and soft-spoken person who never lost his temper, making his sudden and violent death all the more shocking for those who knew him.

Colleagues described him as calm, polite and helpful, saying he rarely got into arguments and often tried to resolve disputes instead.

“He was a simple person and we had never seen him get angry over anything. His father worked for BJP leader Rajnath Singh in Delhi. His uncle was also a teacher. We are aghast at what has happened and want police to track down the culprit at the earliest,” Singh’s relative told The Times of India.
What led to the stabbing?

On Saturday evening, he boarded a Borivali-bound local train from Vile Parle. As the train was about to arrive at Malad station shortly before 6 pm, an argument broke out between Singh and another passenger over getting off the train.
According to the police, the situation escalated suddenly. “Everything happened suddenly. The accused stabbed him with a sharp object in the stomach, got off the train and escaped,” a police official told TOI.

Singh was immediately rushed to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The police later informed his family and the college authorities about the incident.
A colleague from the college said Singh had been teaching mathematics and statistics in the junior college section since 2024. “He was a kind soul, calm and polite and never used to get involved in arguments or fights. In fact, he used to help in resolving fights. This is absolutely shocking for us,” the teacher told TOI, adding that Singh had left the college between 5.15 pm and 5.30 pm to head home.
Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage under police scanner

Police said there were eyewitnesses inside the train compartment who saw the accused and heard the argument. “We have witnesses from the train compartment who saw the accused and overheard the argument. We are quizzing them and recording their statements. CCTV footage from Malad and previous railway stations is being scanned,” a police official said.

Police said Singh suffered a single deep injury to the abdomen and are trying to determine the exact weapon used. “The patient was brought dead around 6pm. He had knife injuries,” a doctor at Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital told the news outlet.
Later in the night, forensic teams collected evidence from Malad railway station, and a canine squad was also deployed. The Borivali Government Railway Police have registered a murder case against an unknown person under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
