The Alleppey Snake Boat Race, also known as Vallam Kali, is one of Kerala\“s most iconic cultural events. These traditional long boats, measuring up to 100 feet in length, resemble snakes gliding through the backwaters. Made from local wood like anjili and jackfruit trees, these boats showcase Kerala\“s exceptional craftsmanship and maritime heritage.
Each snake boat requires skilled artisans several months to construct using traditional techniques passed down through generations. The boats can accommodate over 100 rowers who synchronize their movements to the rhythm of traditional songs called Vanchipattu. The main event occurs during the Onam festival season, particularly the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, attracting thousands of spectators from around the world.
Beyond being a sporting event, the snake boat race represents Kerala\“s agricultural traditions and community spirit. The races originated as friendly competitions between villages during harvest festivals. Today, they serve as a major tourist attraction while preserving ancient cultural practices and promoting local craftsmanship in boat building and traditional arts. |
