The worsening air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai has prompted the authorities to enforce strictest restrictions under Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)-4. The areas which are seeing ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ AQIare the places where the measure has been enforced on Monday. This includes Mazgaon, Deonar, Malad, Borivali East, Chakala-Andheri East, Navy Nagar, Powai and Mulund.
Earlier in the day, a thick layer of smog was seen in the city skies, with low visibility around Marine Drive stretch. Residents of the city have been complaining of trouble in breathing as the air quality kept plummeting for weeks now. Delhi-NCR has always been a severe concern for the people, and with Mumbai joining the list, people are worries as to how the pollution can be controlled.
The overall AQI in Mumbai as of 11 am, was recorded at 111, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.

What all is restricted under GRAP-4 in Mumbai
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a number of emergency measures to curb further pollutionin the city. These include a ban on dust-producing construction or their strict regulation, demolition activity; strict enforcement against garbage and waste-burning in landfills or open spaces among others.
The authorities are also tightening the vehicle emissions, with intensified checks for pollution certificates (PUC) and attempts to reduce traffic-related emissions. Water-sprinkling is also being done across the city along with mechanised road-sweeping to suppress dust from roads and open grounds.
As of now, construction and dust-generating activities in these areas have been paused. Shutdown notices, according to NDTV, have been issued to 50 construction and Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) sites.
Flying squads are present on the roads to keep a check on the implementation of these measures.

How Mumbai’s GRAP-4 different from Delhi’s
In the national capital, the restrictions under Grap-4 include a ban on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel cars. The schools are also changed into online mode and work from home is encouraged.
The government offices run on 50 per cent strength while the rest are allowed to work from home.
Entry of all trucks, except those carrying essential items, are prohibited till the restrictions are in place. |
