HR88B8888 has reportedly become India’s most expensive vehicle registration number after the auction bid closed at Rs 1.17 crore on Wednesday. The number drew the highest participation this week among all plates up for bidding, with 45 bidders in total.
The bid started at a base price of Rs 50,000 and had already reached Rs 88 lakh by noon. By 5 pm, it had touched the record-breaking amount of Rs 1.17 crore.

Haryana conducts online auctions for VIP and special series vehicle registration numbers through its official portal, fancy.parivahan.gov.in. The bidding window opens on Friday at 5 pm and closes on Monday at 9 am, after which the results are announced the following Wednesday at 5 pm. Participants can place bids for their preferred registration numbers, and the highest bidder is awarded the plate once the full payment is completed, NDTV reported.

India’s most expensive number plate?

According to a report by HT, the highest bidder for what is said to be India’s most expensive number plate is identified as Sudhir Kumar. He, per a TOI report, hails from Haryana’s Hisar.

“I had not kept any specific amount in mind and liked the number and just went ahead,” the 30-year-old bidder told PTI, adding that he has not yet chosen the vehicle on which the number will be assigned.
He added, “I was not expecting that this bid would generate such hype. We are in the transport business. We also have a software company, and we are into developing a transport-related mobile app for commercial transportation, and this business is in its early phase.”

According to a TOI report, the bidder has only paid Rs 11,000, which includes a Rs 1000 registration fee and Rs 10,000 as a security deposit. The auction, per the outlet, would only be completed once he deposits the full bid amount. He will get at least five days to pay the full amount.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways website currently lists the allotment status as “assignment pending”.
HR88B8888: What does it mean?

HR-88-B-8888 is a VIP registration number in which HR denotes the state of Haryana, while 88 identifies the specific Regional Transport Office (RTO) or district where the vehicle is registered. The letter B represents the series code within that RTO.
The final four digits, 8888, make the plate particularly distinctive. The combination appears visually striking because the uppercase B resembles the number 8, creating a near-continuous string of eights, with only a single letter breaking the sequence.
This isn’t the first time a number plate has made headlines in India. Earlier in August, a resident of Chandigarh paid a whopping Rs 36.4 lakh for the number plate, CH 01DA 0001, for an Innova.
Prior to this, Kerala tech billionaire Venu Gopalakrishnan bought KL 07 DG 0007 for his Lamborghini Urus Performante at Rs 45.99 lakh, inspired by James Bond’s 007 identifier.
