Pune’s Information Technology (IT) sector has been facing a growing crisis as companies lay off employees amid the global economic slowdown. With recession-like conditions in the US and Europe, the impact is now being felt in India, where firms are seeing fewer new projects and reduced orders from existing clients, Punekar News reported.
Although companies have been reducing the workforce for quite some time now, the impact has now become more visible. The outlet revealed that mid-level professionals are being hit the hardest. The Labour Commissioner, Pune, has been receiving multiple complaints from employees against wrongful termination.
‘Five complaints against TCS’
The hyperlocal news website reported that the Labour Commissioner has been receiving numerous complaints from the IT workers, and at least five of them are against TCS. Most of the complaints have been filed against wrongful termination. This comes after the IT giant earlier announced that it will lay off 2 per cent of its global workforce – around 12,000 employees.

TCS has been summoned by the Pune Labour Commissioner over multiple complaints filed by the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) concerning illegal termination of employment and unlawful layoffs.
“The Labour Commissioner Office, Pune has issued summons to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in multiple matters filed by NITES concerning illegal termination of employment and unlawful layoffs,” read a part of the post shared by the IT employee union.
The union added, “After reviewing the grievances and supporting documents, NITES assisted the affected employees in filing formal complaints before the competent authority. The initiation of proceedings by the Labour Commissioner reinforces that every employer is legally bound to follow due process and cannot act in violation of labour laws.”
“Employees who have faced similar issues are encouraged to come forward and assert their rights. If you have experienced wrongful termination, forced resignation, non-payment of dues, or any form of pressure or unfair treatment, you have legal protections available,” the union further said on X (formerly Twitter).

“Employees from the IT sector have gradually started coming forward with complaints” Punekar News quoted Assistant Labour Commissioner ST Shirke as saying.

Shirke, per the outlet, added, “Most cases involve claims of illegal dismissal. These employees are seeking reinstatement and compensation for the period during which they were removed. During conciliation, both sides are invited for a face-to-face hearing, and if the demands appear justified, necessary action is taken. The effort is always to resolve the matter amicably. If reconciliation fails, the case is sent to the labour court.” |
