Kabaddi is a traditional Indian sport that combines elements of wrestling and rugby. The basic rules involve two teams of seven players each, competing on opposite halves of a court. The objective is for a single “raider“ to enter the opposing team\“s half, tag as many defenders as possible, and return to their own half, all while holding their breath and chanting “kabaddi“.
Each raid lasts a maximum of 30 seconds. If the raider successfully tags opponents and returns, those tagged players are out. If the raider is tackled and prevented from returning, they are out. Teams alternate between raiding and defending. The game continues until all players on one team are out, or the time limit expires. Points are scored for each player out, and bonus points are available in certain situations.
Kabaddi requires no equipment and is played on various surfaces. It emphasizes physical strength, agility, and strategic teamwork. Modern professional leagues have standardized rules, including court dimensions and match durations, helping popularize this indigenous Indian game globally. |
