Harmanpreet Kaur fittingly produces final act to deliver India its maiden Women's World Cup title (BCCI Photo)
The script couldn't have been any better for India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who produced the final act of the evening to deliver India its maiden Women's World Cup title. Positioned at covers with India already sniffing a win, Deepti Sharma bowled a low and wide full-toss to Nadine de Klerk, who, in pursuit of a boundary, slashed it over covers.
The timing was not great, and an already pumped Indian captain backed by a packed arena ran backward and leapt in the air to complete a fine grab that not only gave India the wicket but also the ICC Women's World Cup title.

Harmanpreet, who doesn't shy from showcasing raw emotions, did exactly the same as kept running backward, but this time in jubilation with both her arms spread as the stadium broke out in a loud roar.

"I’m just so grateful for this crowd. They have been amazing. Thank you, everyone, for supporting us through all the ups and downs," were Harmanpreet's first words during the presentation ceremony as she failed to hear the question, courtesy of the non-stop cheers for the Indian captain.
"Even after those three losses, we always had that belief. We spoke about it after the last game - we knew this team had something special to turn things around. Credit to every single member. They stayed positive, focused, and gave everything day and night. This team truly deserves to be here," she added, reflecting on the team's performance after the initial losses during the league stage. |
