Tamil Nadu Vettri Kazhagam raised concerns over the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu and urged the Election Commission to follow its earlier process for purification of electoral rolls. The party also targeted the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) over the exercise.
Claiming it was the first party from Tamil Nadu to raise its voice against Bihar SIR, TVK leader Vijay said their fears regarding the exercise have turned true. Vijay questioned whether the Commission would be able to complete the verification of 6.36 crore voters within 30 days. Vijay said the decision to conduct SIR in Assam later has only strengthened their doubts.
Vijay also accused the ruling DMK of plotting to utilise the SIR issue for electoral gains. He charged that DMK is trying to deceive the public with its opposition against SIR and is trying to divert public attention from its scams.
Vijay's attack against the government comes on a day when the Tamil Nadu government convened an all-party meeting to discuss Tamil Nadu SIR. Questioning DMK's opposition to SIR, Vijay asked why the Tamil Nadu Assembly has not passed a resolution against the exercise like Kerala.
