A few days after she expressed readiness to enter politics, 25-year-old folk and devotional singer Maithili Thakur joined the BJP in Patna ahead of the upcoming Bihar assembly polls.
She claimed that she has been inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to enter politics. The singer joined the BJP in the presence of state BJP president Dilip Jaiswal in Patna.
Maithili Thakur said she does not believe that joining a political party will make her a politician and added that her intention is to serve the society.
On contesting polls
When asked about contesting in the upcoming assembly polls, she said "I am the daughter of Mithila, my soul resides in Mithila...Party will know what they have in mind for me; I am here just to support them. I will do whatever the party orders."

Her presence in the party is expected to attract young voters. While the party hasn't come out with a confirmation on giving her a ticket, according to media reports, it is likely that the folk singer will contest polls from Alinagar in Darbhanga. “My grandmother’s village is in Madhubani and my maternal grandmother’s village is in Darbhanga. People from both places love me equally. But ultimately, it will be the party’s decision," she was quoted as saying.
Who is Maithili Thakur?
Winner of the prestigious 'Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar' of the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) in 2021, she is popular for her folk songs in Maithili and Bhojpuri.
Born in Benipatti in Madhubani district, she and her brothers, Rishav and Ayachi, have performed at several national and international events and literature festivals after the viral success of their social media videos.
Maithili Thakur shot to fame after appearing in the Zee TV reality show 'Little Champs' in 2011. Later, she also contested in Sony TV's 'Indian Idol Junior'. She gained national recognition as the runner-up in the 2017 TV singing competition 'Rising Star' and has a significant social media following.
She has performed songs in many languages including Hindi, Bengali, Maithili, Urdu, Marathi, Bhojpuri, and Punjabi. |
